![]() ![]() All but perhaps one '69 Camaro that did official pace car duty were convertibles. All '69 Camaro Pace Car editions were Dover White with Hugger Orange stripes and interior, the latter in a now-iconic orange and black hound's-tooth-patterned fabric. The hood is similar to those on the Z/28 model, drawing air into the air filter from the high-pressure area located at the base of the windshield. For Z11 "pace car" spec duty, Chevrolet brewed up a special package that blended Super Sport equipment with features from the RS Rally Sport trim option (such as hideaway headlights), for something unique. Plus, the '69 Camaro paced the Indy 500 for the third year in a row. There were all manner of base cars and Super Sports available, plus the Z/28, and an aluminum 427-equipped ZL-1 factory drag racer. Most agree that 1969 was the "It Year" for the first-gen Camaro. As you can imagine, any big-block-powered mid-'60s Impala SS is today a highly sought collectible. The nameplate survived the rest of the '60s, but there was no Impala Super Sport for 1970 the moniker then went into hiding until 1994. The interior is classic American "big car," but what impresses most is that nearly everything that looks like chromed or brushed metal is (and not plastic). It launches hard, and there's so much torque on tap, it feels like you could drive it around town never using anything but second and third gears. And this one's fast - by mid-'60s standards, and even today. It's about Main Street, USA, and gobbling up America's still relatively new Interstate freeway system. But a full-size Impala ragtop isn't about filleting corners. Attempt anything much past moderate cornering, and the skinny tires shred in protest. The ride is American luxury-car, magic-carpet smooth. If you didn't need to shift, you'd park your left arm on the top of the door and drape your right over the top of the steering wheel, and just cruise it, dude. The power steering is fingertip light and utterly devoid of feedback or road feel. The full-size '66 Chevys were a mild update on the all new look introduced in '65, and some consider these years among the best looking Bow-Ties of all time. This El Camino has a lot of potential, and we are sure this is someone’s dream “truck”.This is a lush-looking, comfortable automobile. The only other notable rot is in the bed, and it is a small area located midway in the bed. The biggest issue with this El Camino is the front cross member has some rot needing to either be repaired, or replaced. The lower portion of the rear quarters are rotted, and it looks as if the rockers are starting to develop some rust. There is some various surface rust on the exterior as well as some rot in the lower front fenders. Moving to the exterior also shows a not too bad off El Camino, though there are some issues that need to be pointed out. Oh and did we mention this Chevy is equipped with an 8 track cassette tape player? Big selling point for sure! We are sure there may be some other issues that may better present themselves in person, but overall this interior isn’t too shabby. The driver seat is split, and the glove box door has some minor surface rust. A bit dirty, warranting a solid cleaning, this interior looks to need little. The dark blue interior with the silver exterior is a lovely color combination for this El Camino. Taking a looking inside the “cab” reveals a very reasonable condition interior. The only big item missing from the bay is the 396’s air cleaner. The alternator looks mighty corroded, and it is funny how one valve cover is rusty while the other is reasonably rust free. The engine and bay are covered in a fairly even coat of surface rust, though there appears to not be any major rust of rot present. Optioned with air conditioning, power steering, power disc brakes, and an automatic transmission, this El Camino will make for a comfy driver with those features. The matching number 396 does not run but does turn over by hand. Find it here on eBay out of West Creek, New Jersey. With no reserve, bidding has reached $4,550.00 with 4 days remaining. With loads of potential this would be an awesome El Camino to restore. This 1969 Super Sport example is original with a matching numbers 396 V8. With a UTE type of appearance, the El Camino is the muscle truck that so many of us lust after. ![]()
